An undergraduate degree is a necessary element in all graduate programs. People often work in substance abuse counseling without a graduate degree. Keep in mind a graduate degree is required for the highest level of credentialing. The state requires certification from the National Board of Certified Counselors prior to obtaining the licensure in Delaware.
What Are the Requirements to Become a Counselor in Delaware?
A Master’s degree with 1600 hours of post-Masters training is the standard. The current recession has had an impact on the job market. Some have even been eliminated altogether. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the projections of any field in the counseling is field is expected to substantially grow in light of the economic downturn. The next generations of counselors in Delaware are obligated to complete graduate coursework and supervised practical training as well as passing the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) National Counselor Examination (NCE). The candidate must obtain their degree from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP).
What Are the Supervised Experience Requirements to Become a Counselor in Delaware?
According to the Department of State’s website, 1600 hours of practical training is mandatory. Although, there is a grandfather exception this requirement if there is no Master’s Degree an additional 1600 hours are required. As with any other field, the full license application is subject to verification of all supervised hours. It is always a good idea for the supervisor and licensee to maintain accurate records of the supervised experience.
What Are the Examination Requirements to Become a Counselor in Delaware?
The only required examination is the NCE (National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification). Although the state will accept certified training from a national professional mental health association. The standard for that qualification is decided on a case-by-case basis.
