MFT Degrees, Schools, and Careers in Vermont

In Vermont, there are currently no graduate programs in marriage and family therapy (MFT) that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). Moreover, there are no counseling programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education (CACREP) with an emphasis in couples or family therapy in the state.

The University of Vermont offers CACREP-accredited masters-level programs in both School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, but these do not include a particular emphasis on MFT training. Although the lack of COAMFTE-accredited programs that does not necessarily mean that students cannot pursue either coursework or clinical experiences relevant to MFT, it is important for students wishing to practice as a LMFT in Vermont to ensure that they meet educational requirements outlined by the state government (see MFT Accreditation in Vermont).

Online MFT Degrees in Vermont

Given that there are currently no COAMFTE-accredited schools within the border of Vermont, considering online-only programs may be a wise option for those that (1) wish to obtain a degree from a COAMFTE-accredited institution, (2) live in geographically remote areas that are not close by to a graduate institution, or (3) wish for increased flexibility in the timeline or schedule in coursework. Although there are no online-only COAMFTE-accredited programs based in Vermont, prospective students should consider nationally-based programs such as Capella University and Northcentral University, both of which are accredited by COAMFTE and thus would meet requirements for licensure within Vermont.

In order to become a practicing LMFT in Vermont, individuals must complete an MFT program that meets certain stated educational requirements, a 2-year supervised clinical internship following graduation (with a minimum of 3,000 clinical hours). The guidelines outlined by the Board of Allied Mental Health Professionals indicates that if a graduate program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or a related organization, it meets the specific educational requirements for licensure in the state. Students are not required to attend a COAMFTE-accredited institution to apply for licensure, as other programs may provide the educational requirements necessary for licensure; however, it is the responsibility of the prospective student to ensure that the courses they complete throughout graduate school are in line with the requirements outlined by the state.
